Beware laser hair-removal pitfalls

Skin & Allergy News, Jan, 2003 by Heidi Splete

NEW YORK — Patients’ unrealistic expectations are the major pitfall of laser hair removal, Dr. Eric F. Bernstein said at the 11th International Symposium on Cosmetic Laser Surgery.

In the context of laser hair removal, very intelligent people revert to a 7-year-old’s mentality and hear what they want to hear-not what doctors have to say, said Dr. Bernstein, president of Laser Surgery and Cosmetic Dermatology Centers Inc., Marlton, N.J.

If you tell patients that “it always requires maintenance treatments to keep the hair away,” they will hear, “one treatment, and I’ll never be bothered again,” he said.

Dr. Bernstein tells patients they will need a minimum of three initial treatments 6 weeks apart, plus additional maintenance to keep all the hairs away.

The three initial treatments 6 weeks apart will expose all the hair in a given area to the laser. The laser sees only pigmented hair-anagen hair-not the tiny telogen hairs that even patients can barely see.

Once an area is treated with a laser, the inflammation will drive the telogen hairs into the anagen phase, and the laser will catch them at the next visit.

“The reality is that you need multiple laser treatments to have all the hair [in a given area] seen by the laser,” he said.

Maintenance treatments are always required to keep the hair away in a given area-a statement that Dr. Bernstein has in bold type on his consent form. After only one treatment, hair may be thinner or partly reduced in a certain area, but it won’t be totally gone. That’s an important distinction to make with patients.

“I do nothing but laser 5 days a week, and it doesn’t take long to find out if you’re not doing the initial consult properly,” he said.

Dr. Bernstein described several other potential pitfalls and how he handles them:

* White or blond hair doesn’t respond well to laser hair removal. It doesn’t hurt to do a test spot, but in general, he tells patients that it won’t work.

* Everyone forgets what they looked like prior to treatment. Dr. Berstein takes a preprocedure photo, and it immediately goes in the chart.

* All hair is not created equal. It may only take two treatments to get some hair under control, but other areas may need several more before the patient is satisfied.

* Plan ahead for time-consuming cases such as backs and legs. Price treatments accordingly.

* Respect melanin. Assume patients may not be honest about sun exposure, and assume they aren’t going to follow instructions.

* Do spot tests. Hyperpigmentation or blistering is much worse on a large area than a small area.

* Folliculitis can be a problem

GAINSCO Selects Correlsense SharePath Software to Ensure Top Performance of Self-Service Insurance Portal

Market Wire, July, 2010

Correlsense , a provider of IT reliability solutions , today announced that GAINSCO, Inc. (NYSE Amex: GAN), through its insurance subsidiary, MGA Insurance Company, Inc., and its insurance brand, GAINSCO Auto Insurance (collectively, “GAINSCO”), is using Correlsense SharePath software to manage transactions in its data center. SharePath is providing GAINSCO with insight into how applications are performing in real time so the company can take corrective action before experiencing any negative impact to business operations.

GAINSCO, a property and casualty insurance provider, deployed SharePath to improve the speed of GAINSCO Connect, an online portal used by its U.S.-based insurance agents for quoting and maintaining auto policy information. As a result of implementing SharePath, GAINSCO immediately began aggregating transaction-level data from all data center tiers to quickly detect the online portal’s transactions, monitoring all service levels, performance and speed.

“We wanted to improve the user experience of our Web-based, self-service portal so agents could get the information they need to write new business,” said Phil West, chief information officer at GAINSCO. “We dropped SharePath into our environment and were able to start monitoring transactions right away, even pinpointing issues right down to an errant SQL statement that previously might have taken us days to identify. SharePath is essential for managing our day-to-day operations, and the data we collect helps us better plan for change management.”

Correlsense helps businesses achieve IT reliability by detecting degradations and outages caused by poorly performing applications. SharePath transaction path detection software tracks every transaction through each hop in the data center, from a click in the browser all the way through the data center including proxy servers, Web servers, application servers, message brokers, databases and mainframe. Enterprises such as GAINSCO also use SharePath analytics to optimize the end-user experience, minimize the risks associated with new service roll-outs, issue chargebacks for IT resources consumed and improve the capacity planning process.

“We designed SharePath from the ground up to help companies like GAINSCO monitor 100 percent of transactions without any negative impact on their production environments,” said Oren Elias, Correlsense CEO. “GAINSCO’s strategic approach to IT reliability moves beyond mere performance management to full utilization of all the meaningful data that SharePath provides. By doing so, GAINSCO bolsters other key IT initiatives such as planning, auditing and change management and achieves complete IT reliability where it counts the most — in primary applications crucial to the success of partners and customers.”

You can treat the symptoms, but

You can treat the symptoms, but unless you address the root cause those symptoms will continue to flare up.

Quick, easy solutions do two things:

(1) They provide the critics of the self-esteem movement with more ammunition. They can point to countless people who might have felt good after trying some quick fix solution, only to crash in a heap when the going gets tough. And the critics say ” See, higher self-esteem doesn’t work”

(2) It immunizes people against the concept of self-esteem. When you immunize someone you injecting a very small dose of whatever you are looking to protect them from so their immune system develops anti-bodies to fight the disease. So, with self-esteem, someone who tries some of the quick, easy solutions and finds they only work for a while will eventually become disinclined to ever try it again.

True Self Esteem is not about quick, easy solutions.

Its about starting on a journey of self discovery and development that is life long.

It’s about becoming more and more open to the vast range of opportunities that are
there just waiting to be taken up.

It’s about becoming comfortable enough with who you are that life becomes an enjoyable journey.

It’s about learning to make the most appropriate choices for you.

It’s about living life the way it was meant to be lived.

It’s about being free to make a worthwhile contribution to the betterment of this world in which we live.

And you can start on that sort of journey today.

It hasn?t been that long since high school, has it?

After that, the trainer takes you through a series of machines and free weights and explains how to use them and what weight levels to start with. The trainer then hands you your card record, wishes you luck and encourages you to ask for help anytime. Off you go?

Now the moment of truth: you are worn out from the treadmill, and barely strong enough to do the weight levels and exercises on your card! After a few minutes, you feel so tired, discouraged and even embarrassed because all the people around you suddenly seem to be SO much stronger and more accomplished than you.

The next day, you are too sore to move! An emotionally negative experience for sure.

There are 2 ways to go here: you can tell yourself that it?s just not for you.

And, in the second place, most interviewers consider anyone who uses obvious ?industry speak? as someone who is trying to ?baffle them with B.S.? You will make a much better impression if you choose your words and phrase your answers so that anyone can appreciate the value of your skills and accomplishments. Speak simply and coherently, and your experience will speak for itself.

Don?t ever use slang in an interview. Speak to the interviewer like he or she is your boss. You should always appear polished, professional, and respectful. Use of slang may make the interviewer feel that you are becoming too familiar, and may not respect their position and authority. Even if this is true, it?s unwise to sabotage your chances of getting the job by using slang.

Former GI and his German bride mark 52 years together

0 Comments | Dayton Daily News, Jul 1, 2010 | by HEREABOUTS SANDRA BAER

They grew up on different continents and spoke different languages, but when Bill Griffin looked up from the pool table and spotted the beautiful, young German woman looking in the window, he knew he had to meet her.

It was 1956, and Bill was stationed in Bad Cannstatt, Germany, as an analyst with the 616th Army Counterintelligence Corps.

Little did Griffin know that it was the beginning of a love story that would result in a long and happy marriage.

“We’ve been married 52 years,” said Griffin, 76. “I asked her (Erika) to give me a tour of the Wilhelma Zoo and soon we were seeing each other.”

Griffin grew up in Norwalk, Ohio, but moved to Mansfield, Ohio, where he graduated from Mansfield Senior High School in 1952.

“My father studied to be an architect and helped design the Pavilion at Lakeside, but it was the depression, so he ended up working as a water inspector for 44 counties in Ohio,” said Griffin, who earned a bachelor of science degree in commerce from Ohio University in 1956.

After graduating, Griffin moved to Dayton, where he lived in the YMCA and worked for IBM for six months until volunteering for the draft and being sent to Germany.

Erika’s father worked as a manager in a Mercedes factory and the family lived in Stuttgart Wangen until their apartment was bombed during World War II and they were forced to move to nearby Bad Cannstatt.

“We used to play tag in the bombed buildings,” said Erika Griffin, who was athletic and able to jump out of second-story buildings to the ground in order to avoid being tagged.

“One of the worst times we had with bombings, was when we went upstairs from the basement and found a bomb that had landed in my brother’s bed and was still ticking.

“We had to evacuate until the bomb people came to take it away.”

When word got back to Erika’s family that she was seen holding the hand of an American soldier, they approached Erika and expressed their opposition to her new boyfriend.

But Erika stood her ground and shamed them for judging Griffin before meeting him. Her family relented and after meeting him decided that he would make a fine addition to the family.

Meanwhile, Griffin studied his German dictionary, so that he could communicate with Erika and her family
